SmartPuzzle
Classical bust covered by a golden three-dimensional mesh, bringing together heritage and digital survey

European cultural and creative enterprise

Heritage is already there. Telling its story is another job entirely.

We design digital experiences for museums, local authorities, foundations and associations.
Evidence-based historical reconstructions, digital replicas and visitor systems that run on any phone, with nothing to download.

The projects below were delivered by SmartPuzzle's founding team before the company was incorporated in 2025. SmartPuzzle was created to build on that work.

02 — The starting point

Heritage that goes untold never shows its value.

Collections are studied, conservation work is documented, archives are full. What is almost always missing is the last step, the moment when all of this reaches someone who has ten minutes, a phone in hand and no specialist training.

That last step is our work. We start from the sources and end with an experience anyone can use, with nothing to install and nothing to pay.

Our work is connecting the dots, between sources, places and people.

No app required

Everything runs in the browser. No downloads, no updates, and no one left out because their phone is old.

Sources on the record

Every reconstruction comes with the bibliography and the comparative evidence behind it. Where the evidence runs out, we say so.

Built to last

The 3D assets use standard formats, can be reused, and remain the property of the client.

03 — What we do

Three products and three families of services.

Products

Finestre sul Passato

Historical reconstructions in augmented reality, viewed straight from the browser and triggered by a QR code or an NFC tag along a route through the town. Visitors point their phone and see the place as it once was, with every stop along the way tied together by a compelling narrative.

Each reconstruction rests on archival research, historical maps and comparative analysis, all set out in the accompanying sources report. Scenes open with nothing to install and work on any phone, so the route stays open to everyone, including those who are not comfortable with apps.

Narrative journeys inside digital replicas and 3D reconstructions. Each scene brings together location, short texts, narration or interviews, archival material and interactive hotspots. Studio, Library, Map, Voice and Analytics modules. Multilingual, subtitled, with a teaching mode for schools.

Studio builds the scenes, Library holds the archival material, Map anchors content to places, Voice handles the audio tracks and Analytics measures how the experience is used. Teaching mode adapts each journey for the classroom, with subtitles and several languages available on the same content.

ARTcheck

A web platform for surveying, inspecting and monitoring heritage assets. Configurable records, photographs and 360° panoramas, a 3D baseline, a history of interventions, and PDF and CSV exports for reporting.

Every asset has a configurable record holding its condition, images, 360° panoramas and a 3D reference point. The history of interventions stays available over time and the data exports to PDF and CSV, which makes monitoring both traceable and reportable.

Photogrammetry and laser scanning, point clouds, meshes optimised as glTF or OBJ, orthophotos, CAD drawings and a web-based 3D viewer. From a single object to an entire monumental complex.

From fieldwork to final output, we produce point clouds, web-optimised meshes, orthophotos and technical drawings. The models can be viewed in a browser and reused for maintenance, public engagement and cadastral registration, from a single object to an entire monumental complex.

Conservation documentation

We work alongside designers and conservation firms, providing metric surveys, design drawings and digital documentation of the works, from the diagnostic stage through to handover.

Three-dimensional surveying provides the accurate metric basis the design work needs, while progress documentation, made up of images, thematic decay mapping and models updated as work proceeds, follows the site through every stage. At handover the client receives an ordered, searchable archive, useful both for future maintenance and for reporting on the works.

Applied games and edutainment

Playable experiences for galleries, kiosks and the web, with missions, objectives and usage analytics. A teaching sheet for staff and guides is included.

We design playable experiences tuned to the space, from the gallery to the kiosk to the web, with missions and objectives that carry the visit along. Usage analytics show what is working, and the teaching sheet puts staff in a position to use the experience in the classroom.

We also handle exhibition build, video and 360° filming, training, and advice on funding applications.

Visitor system for Peschiera del Garda

Peschiera del Garda (VR) · Municipality of Peschiera del Garda
Location
Peschiera del Garda (VR)
Client
Comune di Peschiera del Garda
33D reconstructions
100unique visitors a month per reconstruction

The project applies the Finestre sul Passato product to the historic centre of Peschiera del Garda, shown at three different moments in time, the fourteenth, sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. With no app to install, visitors reach the interactive reconstructions from their own phone as they walk the streets, and the screen becomes a window onto the town's past.

Each reconstruction rests on archival research, historical maps and comparative analysis, all set out in the sources report delivered with the project. The scenes are published in several languages and triggered by QR codes along the route.

The project forms part of the initiative “Turismo innovativo in viaggio tra le opere di difesa veneziane”, submitted by the Municipality of Bergamo as lead partner together with the municipalities of Peschiera del Garda and Palmanova for the UNESCO site “Venetian Works of Defence between the 16th and 17th Centuries: Stato da Terra – Western Stato da Mar”, funded by decree of the Italian Ministry of Tourism, Directorate-General for Tourism Development and Promotion (ref. no. 0025629/23 of 4 October 2023, CUP H19E22000150001).

The conservation of Lorenzo Lotto's choir stalls opened the way to a wide-ranging communication project around one of the city's most emblematic works. Rather than closing the area for the duration of the works, the site itself became an interactive installation, open to visitors and built around augmented reality, telling the story of how heritage is given back to the public.

The project also included a programme of associated events and a digital communication plan designed to reach the audiences furthest from conventional cultural venues.

The project brought together the conservation site, a digital communication plan and an education programme for local schools, with audience and teaching results well ahead of the previous period.

Cantiere Vivo, the project on the conservation and interpretation of the choir stalls by Lotto and Capoferri, was the subject of a 60-minute documentary, made with Coral Climb and produced for Rai Storia.

The title Restauratio Humana comes from the inlaid cartouche in one of the main marquetry panels of the screen, and it captures the idea that conservation, when it is well told, can be far more than a craft operation, and become a cultural act in its own right.

07 — Where we start

Where we start.

Direct award

For amounts within the thresholds set by the Italian public contracts code, a direct award is the quickest route. We prepare an itemised quotation and supply the documentation needed for the award decision.

MEPA

We are registered on MEPA, the Italian public administration's electronic marketplace. You can proceed by direct order, direct negotiation or request for quotation, and we prepare the technical and financial documentation to be uploaded to the system.

Calls and funding

We work regularly on projects backed by public bodies, regional authorities and European funding. We can support you in drafting an application, from the technical design to the interpretation plan.

Co-design

If the project is still an idea, we start with a short feasibility study setting out indicative costs and timings, which also helps in putting together a funding application.
